SUSTAINABLE POWER FROM GERMANY: Electric Locomotiv - High-Tech on Rails | WELT Documentary
The Vectron brand electric locomotive is available as an all-electric and hybrid model. It has the tractive power of 23 trucks. The trains, which cost up to 4.5 million euros, are manufactured in Munich. By 2023, DB Cargo plans to use 400 electric locomotives in European cargo rail transport, saving up to eight million liters of diesel per year. The advantage: the locomotive is particularly environmentally friendly and can be modularly assembled and converted, enabling it to run seamlessly on all rail networks in Europe.

PCB Stators replace the bulky copper windings in traditional motors with an ultra-thin disc. PCB Stator motors designed via PrintStator are up to 70% lighter than conventional options, achieve efficiencies in excess of 90%, and require ≈ 80% less raw materials to produce.
ECM released PrintStator as a public SaaS product in January 2024.
Boosting average efficiency in the world’s billions of electric motors could cut over 100 million tons of carbon emissions annually and save citizens over $30 billion in utility costs each year, according to the European Commission and US Department of Energy.

General Motors has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2040, while an array of EV startups have also entered the market. But as electric vehicles continue to gain momentum, critics are raising concerns about the extent of their sustainability and the ethics behind the manufacturing process.
Batteries are the lynchpin technology of EVs and they’re composed of critical minerals including lithium, cobalt, copper, graphite and nickel. The extraction of which is often marred by environmental contamination and worker exploitation in the global south. More than 70 percent of the world’s supply of cobalt is produced in the Democratic Republic of Congo where worker exploitation runs rampant in the artisanal mining industry. Mining itself, while an essential component of many economies, comes with high environmental costs such as the degradation of forests and contamination and overuse of already scarce water.
In response to these concerns, environmental and human rights advocates are calling for more responsible practices in the industry. A commitment to finding new and better ways to recycle batteries is also emphasized by experts who see recycling as a way to reduce reliance on mining and opaque supply chains while improving sustainability. Better battery resilience and recycling is also seen as an essential step towards more sustainable EVs.

The trains, which cost up to 4.5 million euros, are manufactured in Munich. By 2023, DB Cargo plans to use 400 electric locomotives in European cargo rail transport, saving up to eight million liters of diesel per year. The advantage: the locomotive is particularly environmentally friendly and can be modularly assembled and converted, enabling it to run seamlessly on all rail networks in Europe.
